On Monday, amongst hundreds of pages of budget trailer bill provisions, Governor Gavin Newsom signed into law a requirement to extend most charter school petition terms by two years.

Recent California legislation placed direct focus on the performance of charter school governing boards. Among other changes, SB 126 (Leyva) made most charter school governing boards subject to the Ralph M. Brown Act, which guarantees the public’s right to attend and participate in public meetings of local legislative bodies.
