Every year, on or before May 14, the governor releases a “revision” of his January budget proposal for the state’s upcoming fiscal year. Known as the “May Revise,” this document updates the governor’s economic and revenue outlook and adjusts his proposed expenditures.
For charter school board members, it is important to know that the May Revise, and the subsequent adoption of the final state budget in June, will have an impact on the amount of money allocated to public schools because most charter school funds flow from the state’s budget. This information, in turn, will impact each charter school’s budget.
On May 10, 2024, Governor Newsom released his May Revise for the 2024-25 fiscal year. His proposal includes $288.1 billion in state spending and of those dollars, some public school students may generate up to $17,502 in ADA for their schools, but many (depending on location and grade level) will generate less.
