This policy helps to frame the respective roles and responsibilities of the governing board and the administrative staff of the school. Most schools find that it is important to clearly define these roles and responsibilities to avoid disputes related to “micro-management” by the board and/or failure to execute vital responsibilities by the staff. Virtually all charter school governing boards are comprised of volunteers and thus find that it is a practical necessity to delegate the day-to-day operational authority to the school’s administrative staff. When delegating this authority, however, the board must attend to its legal and ethical duties to protect the school’s mission and vital interests (see “Fiduciary Duties” and “Legal Limitations” below).
