CSDC Legislative Update: Win Some, Lose Some in the Senate; AB 1604 Moves Out of The Assembly

The Senate and Assembly both adjourned Thursday afternoon after three days of marathon floor votes leading up to the House of Origin deadline. About 30 of the 100 bills CSDC is tracking didn’t get enough support to move forward this year. That doesn’t mean they are dead - some may be taken up early next year. It does mean there will be fewer bills impacting charter schools heading to the governor in the fall. Votes Reveal Where Senators Stand on Charter Issues

The California State Senate has just 40 members, and bills requiring a majority vote need 21 ayes to move from the Senate Floor to the Assembly. One charter bill moved forward this week and one didn’t make the cut. There is something to be learned from every vote:

Senate Bill 739 by Senator Alvarado-Gil (D - Jackson) is sponsored by the California Charter Schools Association. It would grant charter schools one additional year of renewal relief. There was no debate on the bill. It received 28 votes, with not one Senator casting a no vote against it. All 8 Republican Senators voted for it.
